The 'Dev Firmware Updater' should be used for Apple Development only. The firmware package to upgrade to must be dropped on to the app to launch it. It will update any computer (Core99, Core2001) to a newer version of the firmware.

If the X version does not seem to launch make sure that the 'Dev Firmware Updater/Contents/MacOS/Dev Firmware Updater' file is set with execute priviliges, if not you must set them manually using the termial and a command like:
'sudo chmod 755 Dev\ Firmware\ Updater.app/Contents/MacOS/Dev\ Firmware\ Updater'.
This is distributed as an Application bundle that contains executables for X, and 9.

Bug should be filed under the component 'FirmWare Update'.
Known issues:
X version will not add the the app to the LoginItems if the SystemPrefs are open.

Here is some info you may want to be aware of in regards to how the App works:
It will only update a specific list of machines with Core99 firmware to Core2001 firmware.
References in this document to the 'App' are refering to the 'Dev Firmware Updater'.
The App does not actually flash your ROM or contain the ROM it self. You need to make sure you have the latest Firmware Package for your machine.
The instructions for Updating your computer will vary depending on the version of the firmware currently installed on your computer. If it is a 'f' or final version of the ROM, then you will need to enable flashing by holding in the Programmers Button on your machine. The App should give you correct instructions if you need to do this or not.
To flash an older version of firmware over a newer version, you must flash manually inside open firmware. The Dev Firmware Updater does not support flashing older versions over newer ones.

To enable flashing when an 'f' or final version of firmware is installed on your machine do the following:

For PowerBooks, and iBooks the same function is accomplished from a shut down state by holding the CMD (apple) key and the power key (in that order) down until you can hear the beginning of a monotone beep. As soon as you hear the tone, release both keys.

For iMacs hold the NMI indented button on the right side with this symbol (v) and just press one of the power keys. It is not necessary to hold the power key as in the Powerbooks, but hold the NMI key until the monotone and release.

For PowerMacs hold the NMI button on the front with this symbol (v) and just press one of the power keys. It is not necessary to hold the power key as in the Powerbooks, but hold the NMI key until the monotone and release.
